The Interconnected Relationship of Hip and Knee Pain

When we experience pain and seek medical attention, it’s not uncommon to discover that the source of discomfort might not be isolated to that specific area. Our bodies are intricately connected, and various parts work together to maintain our well-being. Interestingly, if you’re experiencing pain in your knee, it’s entirely possible that your hip is also affected, and vice versa!

Hip and knee pain can arise from issues within the joints or result from underlying conditions originating elsewhere in the body.

The hip joint is a remarkable ball-and-socket joint that bears the weight of your upper body. To function correctly, it relies on an intricate network of muscles and tissues that provide both mobility and stability.

On the other hand, the knee is a hinge joint, allowing movement primarily in the forward and backward directions. When you squat, the knees support your body weight six times more than your hips. The harmonious movement of both hips and knees enables us to perform complex activities like standing, walking, running, and dancing with stability.

Essentially, the hips and knees form part of a linked chain known as the kinetic chain. This group of weight-bearing joints must work harmoniously to ensure proper bodily function.

As a result, any issues affecting the knees can have a cascading impact on the hips and vice versa. Imbalance or strain in one part of the kinetic chain can place stress on other interconnected areas – it’s all interwoven! Understanding this connection is crucial in diagnosing and addressing pain effectively.

Understanding the Root Causes of Hip and Knee Pain

Hip and knee pain can stem from a diverse range of factors.

The sciatic nerve passing through both regions means that pinched nerves can contribute to hip and knee pain. An imbalanced posture or gait can also exert abnormal stress, leading to premature wear and tear in these joints, often resulting in painful arthritis symptoms.

The continuous usage of both hips and knees makes them susceptible to overuse injuries, such as tendinitis and chronic muscle strain. Moreover, acute injuries like sprains, strains, and dislocations can also significantly impact these crucial joints.

Certain painful conditions might be specific to either one or both joints. For instance, hip pain may be linked to cartilage injuries like labral tears, while knee pain may result from bursitis, inflammation of the bursa sac.

Interestingly, injuries causing hip instability can also affect the knees. When hip flexor muscles are excessively tight, and gluteus medius muscles are weak, the hip may involuntarily rotate inward, leading to issues like iliotibial band friction syndrome or patellofemoral stress syndrome. Consequently, this places added stress on the knee or kneecap.

While all of these factors are potential contributors to hip and knee pain, consulting a licensed physical therapist for a comprehensive assessment is the most effective way to identify the true underlying cause of your discomfort. They can provide personalized guidance and targeted therapies to address your specific condition and help you find relief from your hip or knee pain.

What Benefits Does Physical Therapy Provide For Treating Knee And Hip Pain?

Don’t let hip and knee pain hinder your life any longer – our expert physical therapy treatments at Gear Up Physical Therapy and Wellness are here to help. We aim to alleviate, and even eliminate, your discomfort, potentially sparing you from costly and painful surgeries.

When you visit our Telford clinic, one of our skilled physical therapists will thoroughly examine your hip and/or knee, assessing for misalignment or structural damage. During your initial appointment, they will also evaluate your stance, posture, gait, and range of motion.

Based on the results of your physical exam, our dedicated physical therapists will devise a personalized treatment plan to alleviate unnatural stress and strains in your joints. We aim to improve your overall joint function, enabling you to resume your normal daily activities without pain.

Your treatment plan will include specific exercises tailored to your condition to relieve joint pain and strengthen weakened hips and/or knees. Depending on your unique needs, exercises may focus on enhancing hip and knee strength rather than solely targeting the knees, which is especially beneficial for those experiencing kneecap pain.

In addition to targeted exercises, you may receive core strengthening exercises to fortify your back muscles, lower abdominal muscles, and pelvic muscles. These exercises improve posture and balance weight distribution on both sides of your body.

Furthermore, our physical therapists may incorporate specialized treatments into your recovery plan. These may include mobilizations to enhance joint movement or other soft tissue treatments that alleviate pain and heal damaged hip and/or knee tissue. Rest assured, our treatments are tailored to your requirements to provide the best possible outcomes.

At Gear Up Physical Therapy and Wellness, we’ve created a 3 step process to get rid of your pain AND make sure it doesn’t come back again.

Step #1 - We Want To Listen To Your Story

Our medical system is frustrating. You wait weeks, sometimes months, for an appointment, only to get to talk to the doctors for 10 minutes before they have to run to the next patient and you’re left sitting there wondering, “What just happened?”

Even most physical therapy clinics operate this way. They’re not attentive, they’re fast-paced, and the therapist lacks the time to address the exact location of your pain.

This is why our first step is to listen to your story.

After working with lots of people with Hip/Knee Pain we know that no two people are alike. Each person has a different body, a different history, and different types of pain.

That is why our first step is to have an open conversation and time for you to tell your story. That way we get a deep understanding of what’s going on not just with your body, but also how it’s impacting your life.

Step #2 - Find Out WHY The Pain Started

Many people have a diagnosis, or medical term for what’s going on with their body. Maybe their doctor gave it to them, maybe tests showed the diagnosis, or maybe they found it online.

You could have been told that your only choice was to rest, take painkillers, or start thinking about surgery.

Sometimes, those things bring temporary relief, but they’re not addressing what CAUSED the problem in the first place.

Every person’s cause of pain is different. No one has the exact same problem caused by the exact same thing as another person.

Our goal at Gear Up Physical Therapy and Wellness is to find that original cause of your pain, so not only does your pain go away, it STAYS AWAY!

During the Hip/Knee Pain Assessment, you’ll find out what’s wrong, how long it’s going to take to fix it, and give you peace of mind that your problem can be fixed naturally!

Step #3 - Get Rid Of The Pain & Keep It From Coming Back

This is when the big transformation occurs. We develop a personalized plan that allows you to…

…Get back to your daily activities without fear of the pain coming back.
…Be able to get back to your favorite workouts, sports, activities
…Get back to feeling how you were pre-injury

Our best clients are those who are motivated and ready to win back their active lifestyle. (Even if they feel stuck right now!)
